For those who need guidance when it comes to playback issues, here's a quick guide:
For windows users I highly recommend installing the K-lite mega codec pack and Zoomplayer(mainly because its prettier than media player classic and also supports playlists).
K-lite also includes real alternative and quicktime alternative in its package so you can play mov and rm files.
Your best bet is to either use the Media Player Classic that comes with K-lite(it also comes with CCCP) or zoomplayer as your main media player for everything and have VLC around on the off chance you come across something the other players wont play.
Most anime sites recommend the CCCP codec pack but I'm not a big fan as it doesnt support divx containers, rm files and quicktime files
If you are going the CCCP route however you can also install real alternative and quicktime alternative (solving the problem of playing rm and mov files) without interfering with CCCP just make sure you dont install Media Player Classic each time as you really dont need 3 copies of it.
For non-windows users:
Ye are pretty much stuck with VLC unless ye want to try mplayer. Mplayer is supposed to be the better player but is a bit awkward to install and configure particularly for Mac users. Im far too lazy and have very little info on hand to do a proper guide for non windows users so Im afraid ye'll have to use google if ye want more info than that.
Most people swear by VLC and I'll admit I used to be one of these people but no longer.
VLC is an awesome player that can play pretty much anything but it has problems with h264 encodes and softsubs (a lot of new releases seem to be going down this road), nothing too severe but there have been a few shows Ive come across which had episodes which proved unplayable (later episodes of Code Geass being the best example) so until they fix the problems they have with softsubs I would relegate VLC to a secondary role. VLC is also a bit dodgy when it comes to skipping ahead with ogm or mkv formats as it usually causes random garbage to appear on the screen for a few seconds .

Things to avoid:
Windows media player, realplayer, itunes <- these are among the worst software creations in history, do NOT use these for playback. Better yet, remove them from your machine.
NOTE: Before installing either of the 2 big codec packs you should remove any codecs or other codec packs you already have as they may interfere with playback.
