Here is my quick run down of what u need to play mkv files.
1. Download MPC -> http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading...90.zip&23982960
This is the best player in my opinion.
2. Download ffdshow if you dont already have it.

3. And install this http://www.cccp-project.net/download.php?type=cccpi
Now you should be able to play mkv files with ease. If you stil cant, tell me in the forum.
