taxis passed along but didn't feel like spending money on them.. the public buses were all closed up

Often during the war Jewish furniture and flats were given to those who had lost everything because of the Allied air raids. I guess it should tell us something about human nature ... if there is something to gain they will be there if there is nothing to gain they won't step up.

First in 1933 the SA basically raided town-halls throughout the Reich hunting down their political enemies, dragged out left-wing mayors and deputees, beat them up, "convinced" them to decline their seat in town-halls and parliarments and such ... some where inprisoned in so-called "wild prisons" so basically inprisoned by the SA who claimed to be police, locked up in private cellars claimed to be set up prisons ... stuff like that ... later on the Reichs-Pogrom was set up where SA troops for the main part attacked Jewish quarters and stores and synagogues whilst the regime claimed it to be caused by public unrest ... enemies of the state and the people were defined leading to the emigration of Jews, Socialists, Communists, intellectuals, scientists ... those who stayed were often sent to the camps ... no death-camps on German soil by them but still ... harsh forced labor there ... but by then they already started to kill mentally retarded people usually with poison through injection, after occupying Poland they set up the first death-camps over there and then things have gotten out of hand ... people were sent there for forced labor with nearly no food meant to die from exhaustion ... thousands sent to the ghettoes with low rations, thousands died there starving ... especially Jews and political opponents from the Reich were also sent there to die ... first they tried shooting, thats right, but they quickly went over to use fumes ... they also used trucks where they led the fumes inside the back of the truck to kill people there but they were not able to kill as many as they wanted, thats when they came up with Zyklon-B and gassed large numbers with pesticide ... if you tried to flee you were shot by the guards of course. That was the "Lager SS" - The Camp SS! There were also the "Einsatzgruppen" The Special Forces of the SS. They basically followed the Wehrmacht and killed civillians of the occupied territories. Basically all Jews and Gypsies and Communists they could find. They'd usually drag them to a nearby forest, forced them to dig holes there and shot them on the spot, often assisted by Wehrmacht suads who either helped digging the holes or stood guard or helped them to drag people there ... there were also cases where soldiers assisted in the killing. Were they forced to do so? Well ... thats a question people still argue about ... yes and no I would say. True: there were orders or they were ask to do stuff, but each member always had the choice. For instance: there were police squads from the Reich sent to the occupied territories in Eastern Europe. Ordinary Men so to speak! When they got there they've been told they had to do a terrible deed for Volk, Fuhrer and Reich, but whoever felt he could not do it would be dismissed and sent back home. So there was the choice! There are cases known where policemen refused to take part in the shooting and the worst that happened was they were sent home! So they had THAT choice! There were, however, hardly that many who did refuse! Why? Because of their comrades! Many of them felt they had to do it because they did not want to let down their comrades. Others might have expected punishment even though there wasn't any, so they thought there was no choice. (Check Christopher Browning on that one. He did a marvellous study on those police squads on that question.) But there were also others who welcomed the chance to kill people without being charged for it. There were sodiers who helped the "Einsatzgruppen" of the SS to hunt down escapees of extermination camps and assisted in shooting them on their day off! (Check Raul Hilberg: The Extermination on European Jewry on that one) ...

As a result, what you have learned so far is forgot, and you don't notice the enemy coming up from behind you. Guess what? Since you were tired and dozed off, your throat is slit and you're dead. Or if you are captured and need to keep certain things a secret, you need to keep your tactical misinformation consistent. If deprived of sleep,you will not be able to keep it straight. Well damn it, you slipped up and leaked some information. How? You showed inconsistency, and they picked it up and drilled at that until you accidentally told the truth. If you are going for Psychology, push the boundaries of what you can accept and understand.
